The Anti-Cancer Effects of Vigorous Intensity Exercise
Vigorous intensity exercise has anti-cancer effects independent of the immune system. The mechanical force of blood flow due to exercise can impact circulating tumor cells by causing them to undergo apoptosis. Studies show that engaging in aerobic exercise for six months at 50 to 70 percent max heart rate for 150 minutes a week can significantly reduce circulating tumor cells in colon cancer patients. Additionally, circulating tumor cells are linked to a higher risk of cancer recurrence and mortality, but engaging in aerobic exercise can reduce cancer recurrence and mortality rates. Short bursts of intense exercise, known as 'exercise snacks', can also provide benefits by raising heart rate to 75-90 percent max heart rate.
