The Effects of Exercise Intensity on Brain Function

Exercise, especially at the right amount, has a greater impact on the reduction of risk of Alzheimer's disease than any other intervention. The mechanisms by which exercise reduces the risk of Alzheimer's disease are numerous. Intensity of exercise plays a role in the neurobiological effects of exercise. Moderate intensity exercise is defined as 50 to 70 percent of maximum heart rate and vigorous intensity exercise is defined as above 75 to 85 percent of maximum heart rate. The recommended exercise duration is 150 to 300 minutes of moderate intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity exercise per week. Higher intensity exercise may provide greater brain benefits. Measuring heart rate is an important factor in determining exercise intensity.
