Why We’re All Addicted / The Cultural Norms that Contribute to Society's Addiction
Driving is statistically one of the top threats to mortality, but there are other cultural norms contributing to society's addiction. Our society is built around addiction, surrounded by fast food chains, sugary drinks, junk food, porn, infinite scroll, binging TV shows, alcohol, smoking, gambling, and more. We expect individuals to resist these temptations, but everything is designed to get them addicted. This overwhelming environment makes it difficult to prioritize important issues like the environment, AI alignment, and avoiding war. We have empathy for individuals who are struggling with sleeplessness, obesity, cardiovascular diseases, porn and drug addictions because we have manipulated the chemicals in their brains for corporate greed and other motives.
