How to Avoid Victimhood Through Radical Responsibility and Recognizing Triggers
The key to avoiding victimhood is radical responsibility and recognizing triggers. It is important to understand that external factors, such as someone's facial expression, are not the cause of our experiences. Blaming others and trying to control their behavior is a sign of victim consciousness. Instead, taking responsibility involves acknowledging that our internal beliefs and needs are the cause of our experiences. By practicing self-awareness and noticing when we are triggered, we can choose to accept ourselves and claim responsibility for our reactions. This involves asking insightful questions to understand how we create our experiences and what payoffs we may be getting from them. When we drift off course, we can recommit to taking responsibility and continue learning from our experiences in various aspects of life, including intimate relationships and work teams.
