Resetting reference points with ancient stoic technique
Resetting reference points is a technique that involves changing our perspective by visualizing the loss or absence of positive aspects in our lives. This practice, known as negative visualization, was emphasized by the ancient Stoics. By briefly imagining the absence of things we value, we can reset our reference point and prevent hedonic adaptation. This technique allows us to appreciate the good things we have and to savor them more fully. For example, by envisioning the last time we would talk to our children, we can cultivate a greater appreciation for each interaction and hold them closer. Ultimately, by consciously shifting our reference points, we can lead a richer and more fulfilling life.
