How to Make the Most of Incremental Learning

Incremental learning can be achieved by tapping into plasticity through completing tasks and making repetitive errors. By focusing on a specific task, such as learning conversational French, and engaging in deliberate practice for a period of time, the mind can enter a state of focused tunnel vision for about an hour. However, after this period, the mind may start to drift and lose focus. It is recommended to stop the learning after about 90 minutes and take a break or nap to enhance learning. The process of making errors for a duration of 7 to 30 minutes is crucial for stimulating plasticity. The frustration experienced during this time liberates chemical cues and activates specific neurons, signaling the need for change. Taking a break and returning to the learning later allows for improved retention and better performance. It is important to note that most people can only tolerate one or two intense learning bouts per day, while some may handle up to three. By understanding and utilizing incremental learning strategies, individuals can maximize their learning potential.
