One of the fundamental desires and needs of a human being is to be known and seen. This need arises because in moments of pain, struggle, and difficulty, when we are seen by others, we no longer feel alone. Society and the way we live often promote separation and hiding parts of ourselves, but deep healing comes from being seen. Desperation in pain can lead us to seek help and to be seen and held. Religion and a personal connection with God can provide that sense of being seen and known, but it is important to view God as a source of unconditional love and acceptance rather than judgment. When we are entirely seen and loved, including our shadows and flaws, our version of God or creativity can fill us up.

One of my best podcasts of all time, this emotional conversation that’s been 16 years in the making, is with my wife Vylana Marcus and former fiance / best friend Caitlyn Howe. We sit down with a bottle of whiskey and let it all out. We each take turns sharing our darkest hours and deepest shadows, with a lot of tears and a lot of laughs.
