Heart rate efficiency

Improving endurance leads to a decrease in resting heart rate and an increase in stroke volume. Resting heart rate is a metric to measure fitness, with a target of sub 60 beats per minute. However, resting heart rate is not a good indicator of cardiac output, which remains the same. Cardiac output only adjusts for energetic changes. Efficiency can be seen in a lower heart rate at the same workload due to an increase in stroke volume. Maximum heart rate is not a good indicator of fitness.
