The Importance of Sleep
Sleep is evolutionarily programmed and serves important functions. Evolution designed humans to spend a third of their lives sleeping, even though it may seem counterproductive. Sleep is not for mating, watching out for predators, or hunting for food, but it must have a significant purpose. Evolution went to great lengths to make sleep a part of our lives, despite the potential costs. During sleep, we are not engaged in essential survival activities like eating, reproducing, or caring for offspring, making us vulnerable to predation. If sleep did not serve vital functions, it would be the biggest mistake in the evolutionary process.
