*Why the Software Industry Is So Tribal *

The size of the programming community is constantly growing with new people coming in every five years. Many newcomers identify strongly with a specific programming language or tool, leading to an identity problem within the industry. This is especially prevalent among those who are new to programming and have limited experience with different tools. Consequently, there is a tendency for individuals to view criticism of their preferred tool as a personal attack. To overcome this tribal mentality, individuals should strive to generalize and not identify themselves too closely with their tools. Although job contexts may require specific tool expertise, in overall work and life, professionals should consider themselves as software developers or engineers, embracing the fact that tools have trade-offs and a limited shelf life.
