The Pattern Noise Problem in Decision Making
The diversity and uniqueness of individuals is often celebrated for bringing creativity and innovation. However, when it comes to making judgments, diversity can be problematic. When different doctors give different diagnoses, instead of appreciating the diversity, we question the correctness of their answers. This is known as pattern noise, where people's personal histories, biases, and sensibilities influence their judgment. Pattern noise is not good news as it creates inconsistency and uncertainty in decision-making.
