Psychiatric medications, such as SSRIs and benzodiazepines, are designed to dull overwhelming thoughts and slow mental activity, particularly in individuals with anxiety or OCD. While these medications can decrease the frequency of distressing thoughts by numbing emotional responses, they do not address the underlying sources of these thoughts. Psychotherapy, in contrast, targets the root causes of negative thinking patterns, aiming to eliminate the origin of the toxic thoughts, providing a more comprehensive treatment approach.
