Why We Stop Appreciating the Best Moments in Life
We never fully appreciate the best moments in life due to two biases: reference point comparisons and hedonic adaptation. Firstly, our bias towards reference points prevents us from feeling satisfied because we are always comparing our current situation to a better one. Secondly, we have a natural tendency to get used to things, even the best things in life. As we become accustomed to them, we stop noticing their greatness and they lose their impact. This phenomenon, known as hedonic adaptation, causes us to stop appreciating even the good things that stay with us. Overall, these two biases contribute to our inability to fully appreciate the best moments in life, leading us to constantly seek something better and diminishing our ability to feel contentment.
