Mapping the Digital World for Shared Reality
Building a detailed and dynamic three-dimensional map that connects digital experiences to the real world is crucial for creating persistent and shared augmented reality (AR) experiences. This mapping allows users to interact with virtual objects and experiences in actual locations, enhancing the feeling of realism and community engagement. As advancements in AR technologies, such as Apple's Vision Pro and Meta's products, emerge, the mapping effort focuses on enabling these technologies to function effectively. The distinction between traditional maps and this new type of map lies in its purpose: while traditional maps assist humans, this 'map for computers' equips digital devices, like AR glasses and robots, with the spatial awareness necessary to navigate and interact with the world. For such devices to provide meaningful information and assistance, they must possess precise knowledge of their locations, underscoring the need for an accurate digital mapping of the environment.
