Vision Defines the Destination, Mission Drives the journey

Mission articulates the fundamental purpose of a company or team, answering the question of why it exists. It serves as the guiding force that drives the organization forward. For instance, Ted's mission to spread ideas exemplifies this purpose-driven approach, as does Stripes’ mission to increase the GDP of the Internet. In contrast, vision describes the desired future state or long-term goal, outlining what success looks like when the mission is fulfilled. This can be seen in Microsoft's vision for a computer on every desk and in every home, which paints a clear picture of their aspirations. Similarly, Tesla’s ambition to be the leading car company of the 21st century reflects specific, inspirational goals. A compelling vision encapsulates what the organization aims to achieve and must remain realistic, allowing for clarity and motivation as teams work together in pursuit of the mission.
