Visual Placement and Focus

Where we place our visual focus in a given environment can significantly impact our level of alertness. The relationship between where we look and our level of alertness is controlled by clusters of neurons in our brain stem. When we look down, the neurons associated with eye movement release certain neuro modulators and neurotransmitters that activate areas of the brain associated with calmness and sleepiness, reducing alertness. Conversely, when we look up, the neurons associated with eye movement trigger the activation of brain circuits associated with alertness, increasing our level of alertness. This wiring between our eyes and brain has implications for optimizing work environments and maintaining focus.
