Chris Voss: How to Succeed at Hard Conversations

NOTE

When to fire someone and deliver bad news

When firing someone, it is best to do it on a Monday rather than a Friday. This gives them a work week to recover and start looking for a new job. Firing someone on a Friday leaves them with a weekend to feel miserable and helpless. When delivering bad news, it is important to warn the person first, allowing them to mentally prepare. Then, deliver the news quickly and directly, without prolonging the conversation. Giving false reassurances or trying to soften the blow only prolongs the pain. By ripping off the bandaid quickly, the pain is minimized, and people can move on more quickly. Human beings are resilient, especially when they are given the chance to confront and embrace their pain.
