The Impact of Audience Capture and Narrow Conversations on Society
The increasing prevalence of audience capture and narrow conversations is shattering our society. People tend to align with their biases and focus on what's wrong with the opposing side. There is an asymmetry in how political biases drive narrow conversations. Outside of normal channels, there is audience capture where individuals find signal from the noise on a particular topic and create content exclusively on that topic, ignoring everything else. This leads to a lack of proportion and the loss of critical conversations. Society is becoming increasingly divided, making it difficult to have conversations about crucial facts for the maintenance of democracy, public health, and other important issues.
