The Problem With Knowledge Capture
The problem with knowledge capture is that experts often struggle to share their expertise in a way that is understandable and useful for learners. Experts may skip over important steps that are natural to them but critical for others to know. To address this, it is important to go backwards and start with the problem being solved and how it relates to those who can influence it. Avoid making assumptions and instead rely on data to understand the mistakes people are making and why they are making them. Training alone is not enough if the underlying reasons for mistakes are not addressed. One approach is to record experts explaining their process and then have learners watch the recordings together, allowing for questions and further clarification. Additionally, it is important to consider how and when people need information, rather than expecting them to memorize everything.
