Josephus, a Jewish historian born not long after Jesus’ crucifixion, may well have had connections to people who witnessed the “trial” of Jesus in Jerusalem. That is part of the findings of a new book written by Tom Schmidt (Oxford University Press, 2025). Schmidt, a historian of early Christianity, goes back to the Testimony of Flavius Josephus regarding Jesus of Nazareth (Antiquities 18.63-64) and interprets it against the exegetical grain of recent scholarship to give us a more robust and accurate reading.
