Deep dives
Lack of Vision in US and Europe's Africa Policy
The US and Europe's lack of strategic vision for Africa is highlighted by a discussion on what they want from the continent. There is concern over the absence of a clear strategy, especially in countering Chinese influence in Africa. The podcast explores how the US and Europe fall short in defining success in their engagements with Africa, leading to a sense of ambiguity on their intentions and goals.
Europe's Disjointed Approach and Colonial Legacy in Africa
Europe's disjointed approach to Africa reflects a lack of coherence between EU member states and institutions in dealing with the continent. The discussion delves into the colonial trauma that shapes Europe-Africa relations, with a reluctance to confront historical injustices. The narrative emphasizes the impact of colonialism on Africa and the challenge of reconciling the past with contemporary partnerships.
Chinese Strategic Advantage and FOCAC Opportunity

With the upcoming Forum on China-Africa Cooperation, China has an opportunity to strengthen ties with African nations. The Chinese approach, emphasizing shared colonial trauma and forward-looking partnerships, contrasts with the West's historical legacy and disjointed policies, presenting China with a strategic advantage.

Europe is Africa's largest trading partner and its largest source of foreign direct investment. But a lot of that economic engagement is powered by inertia, left over from Europe's long, painful history of colonial exploitation in Africa.
Just as in the United States, Europe's politics are decidedly inward-looking where Africa, if it's on the agenda at all, is still largely seen as a "problem to be fixed." When policymakers do raise the issue of heightened engagement with the continent, it's often in the context of what the EU can do to counter China's influence in Africa.
