Understanding Oikeosis and the Expansion of Human Affinity

Oikeosis is the process by which our self-interest for survival expands to include the interests of others as we grow to become rational adults. It begins with a natural affinity for ourselves, but through the use of our rational faculties, our affinity expands to include all things in alignment with our roles. Oikeosis is the basis for the circles of concern and the concept of justice in Stoicism. Making appropriate choices based on Oikeosis involves understanding our roles and responsibilities and prioritizing them over momentary passions.
