Deep dives
Framework for Effective Goal-Setting
Setting goals for the upcoming year involves a structured framework focusing on both professional and personal spheres. This includes defining big goals, checkpoint goals, daily systems, and anti-goals. Big goals represent the overarching ambitions that motivate, while checkpoint goals serve as milestones along the journey. Daily systems consist of actionable steps to facilitate progress, and anti-goals identify potential sacrifices to avoid in pursuit of these aspirations.
Mental Models for Execution
To enhance execution of daily systems, three mental models are introduced: the ABC system, the two-day rule, and the 30-for-30 approach. The ABC system allows flexibility by categorizing daily actions into ambitious, base, and minimum levels, thus ensuring that some progress is made even on challenging days. The two-day rule emphasizes the importance of consistency in habit formation, suggesting that one can miss one day but not two in a row. Finally, the 30-for-30 approach encourages a commitment to practice a skill for 30 minutes each day over 30 days, leading to significant results through consistency.
Monitoring Progress and Adjusting Goals
The necessity of tracking progress and making adjustments throughout the year is underscored using the 1 in 60 rule from aviation, highlighting how small errors can lead to larger misses over time. A monthly three-question check-in is recommended to evaluate the alignment of goals, the effectiveness of daily systems, and adherence to anti-goals. This reflection is crucial for making timely course corrections and ensuring continued progress. Conducting this exercise individually and in small groups can foster accountability and provide valuable feedback, enhancing the annual planning process.
