His job as a tradesman was not fulfilling his needs which led to him making impulsive and reactive decisions so that he could find temporary relief in evenings and weekends. Kirk wants you to evaluate your state. Are you in a reactive or proactive state?
He explains why you have to identify and ask yourself honest questions about your work and relationships so that you can assess if they are fulfilling your needs. It is important that you understand your human needs; does your career, relationships and habits fulfil your needs? You need mental stimulation in order to be a healthy person.
