Understanding the Psychology of Procrastination
Procrastination often occurs when there are tasks or activities that we have to do but don't enjoy or feel competent at. It can create resistance and friction as a way to protect us from engaging with something we dislike or fear. Addressing this procrastination requires identifying the underlying reasons, such as feeling incompetent or protecting ourselves from failure. By categorizing these reasons, we can take steps to address them, such as seeking support or advice. However, one counterintuitive method that consistently works is embracing boredom. By creating space for stillness and silence and intentionally sitting with boredom, we create internal tension that pushes us to do the task we've been avoiding. Over time, this practice also helps us become comfortable with the irritation of procrastination itself.
The Power of Embracing Boredom
In a world filled with distractions and constant stimulation, true boredom is rare. Many people mistake being entertained or searching for something to occupy their time as boredom. However, genuine boredom involves sitting still and engaging in boredom-inducing activities like staring at a wall or sitting in silence. Training ourselves to be comfortable with boredom helps us overcome procrastination. When faced with the choice between being bored and doing the task we've been avoiding, the internal tension created by boredom often motivates us to take action. Moreover, this practice also helps us develop the ability to observe and let go of the states that arise within us, reducing the power of procrastination over our actions.
Embracing Boredom as a Practice
In our fast-paced and busy culture, many people have lost the skill of being bored. From a young age, our schedules are often packed, leaving no room for stillness or quietude. However, intentionally creating moments of silence and boredom can be transformative. It allows us to confront the chaos and internal noise that exists within us, which often contributes to procrastination. By sitting with that noise and embracing the discomfort of boredom, we learn to quiet the chaos and dissolve the urge to procrastinate. Over time, the practice of being bored becomes more enjoyable, and the fear or resistance to tasks diminishes, leading to increased productivity and a greater sense of control over our actions.
