Deep dives
The Evolution of High Heels
High heels have a long history dating back to at least the 10th century in Persia. They were originally used as a functional tool for equestrian purposes, allowing riders to secure their feet in stirrups. Over time, high heels became associated with femininity and power, with women using them as a way to manipulate and attract men. In the 17th century, high heels were first embraced by men before eventually becoming exclusive to women. The fashion and symbolism of high heels have evolved throughout history, with different styles and heights signaling social status and gender roles.
The Rise of Sneakers
Sneakers, or trainers, emerged in the mid-19th century with the harnessing of rubber. They were initially worn by wealthy Victorians to play lawn tennis and showcased their leisure time and status. As rubber became more accessible, sneakers gained popularity as comfortable and casual footwear. Today, sneakers have become a fashion statement, with collaborations between high-end designers and athletic brands. They are associated with youth culture and counterculture, bridging the gap between functionality and style.
The Significance of Ugg Boots and Crocs
Ugg boots, originally created in 2002, have gone through a transformation in how they are perceived. Initially criticized for being unfashionable, they have been revived and embraced by Gen Z and have become connected with high fashion through collaborations with luxury brands. On the other hand, Crocs, known for their distinctive design, started as workwear shoes for lawn tennis players. They have also gained popularity in recent years and are associated with comfort and individuality. Both Ugg boots and Crocs challenge traditional notions of fashion, blurring the lines between high-end and casual footwear.
Gendered Differences in Footwear
Throughout history, footwear has been heavily gendered, with high heels being associated with femininity and power. Male footwear, on the other hand, has been more focused on functionality and practicality. Men's naked feet have not been seen as attractive in Western culture, with cultural norms dictating that men should keep their feet covered. This gender disparity in footwear reflects broader societal attitudes towards power, sexuality, and gender roles.
I’m something that you wear, I always come in twos, I get put on your feet. I’m not socks, I am … SHOES.
Humans have been protecting their feet for a very long time.
But over the years the types of footwear we choose have developed and multiplied. Each new shoe has a new use, and often a new social meaning.
So what is the history of shoes? To find out about the masculine beginnings of heels, the reclamation of crocs, and the political ideals of docs, Kate chats to Elizabeth Semmelhack, creative director and senior curator of the Bata Shoe Museum in Toronto.
