Polycystic kidney disease is a condition characterized by fluid-filled sacs around the kidneys, leading to reduced kidney function. Until recently, there were no effective non-toxic treatments available for this genetic disease. However, a 2019 study found that a ketogenic diet and intermittent fasting slowed down the progression of cyst development and associated fibrosis in mice with polycystic kidney disease. Time-restricted eating and low oxalate intake were also found to have similar effects. By reducing glucose intake and maintaining proper hydration, individuals with polycystic kidney disease may potentially see improvements in their condition.
