How does the pro-blame bias influence our thinking and judgment?

Cory Clark, Behavioral Scientist, joins Josh Trent on the Wellness + Wisdom Podcast, episode 698, to unpack why we shouldn't fully trust science, how victim mentality creates a dysfunctional dynamic, the dangers of social media-fueled tribalism, and how self-awareness, courage, and meaningful conflict can transform the way we create an honest connection with others in today’s world.

"When you have people who identify strongly with a political in-group on the left or right, they start to become very afraid of contradicting beliefs that are strongly held by their in-group based on the fear of being ostracized. Our brains evolved to be averse, trying to avoid anything that could get us ostracized from our social group. So we're giving so much power to the extremists within our own group when most of the time, they're not the people to be listening to." - Cory Clark

Power Quotes From The Show Pro-Blame Bias

""People have this tendency more in general where they think bad things are going to happen more than they probably will and they think good things are less likely to happen. So they have this bias toward assuming bad things." - Cory Clark

The Downside of Victimhood

"There are short-term benefits to victimhood. So if you signal your victimhood, I might give you some money. I might not challenge you. I might let you get away with little things here and there. However, people, in general, don't want to have permanent relationships with people who take and don't give because anytime someone is appealing to someone else for resources, they are now taking advantage of that other person. They've created an imbalance between themselves and that person." - Cory Clark

Self-Censorship

"Many people are self-censoring their own beliefs and based on an unwarranted fear of what might happen to them if they were to be honest and speak what they truly think openly around people who might disagree with them. If everybody had more courage to speak their truth, we could radically change." - Cory Clark
