Deep dives
The Essence of Spirituality
Spirituality is not about behaviors or external forms of practice, but about experiencing the profound beauty and perfection of life. It is a moment of deep connection and awareness that goes beyond intellectual understanding. This spiritual essence is inherent in all living beings and allows us to see and appreciate the divine energy that permeates everything.
Psychology, Spiritual Essence, and Behavior
Psychology initially focused on studying the spirit or the essence of life within human beings, but later shifted its attention to behavior and diagnosing mental health issues. This shift led to a narrowing of focus and a categorization of problems, leading to a growing list of diagnoses. However, understanding the spiritual nature of human beings allows us to see that there is nothing inherently wrong with people. It is our thinking and our unawareness of how the spiritual essence creates our experiences that lead to psychological distress.
The Power of Thought and Perception
Our perception of the world is influenced by our thoughts, as our brain interprets the sensory input and creates our experience. People with psychosis, for example, have a different functioning of cells in the brain, resulting in a distorted perception of reality. Recognizing that our experience is shaped by the interplay between thought and perception helps us see that our experiences are not fixed or objective. By understanding the spiritual nature of human beings, we can navigate through our thinking and tap into our innate well-being and wisdom.
Psychology is a product of early 20th century interest in studying the soul and the mind. The word psychology has its origins in Greek words meaning "the study of the soul." As scientific methods -- focus on the measurable -- became the focus of study, Psychology abandoned the immaterial, immeasurable soul, calling it the purview of Religion, and focused on behavior, which is measurable. With that, we lost the understanding that a soul at peace would generate different behaviors than a soul in turmoil. We lost focus on the spiritual source of thought and started defining people by the outcomes of their thinking. The Principles bring us back to the Source, a Feeling of deep connection to the universe.
