If you grew up with a gap, you know the moment: everyone else in the room already knows what to do, and you don't. No one ever sat you down and taught it to you, it just never got handed over. In this episode of the Gaps We Grew Up With series, I walk through the three tools I've used across my life to close those gaps, books, the internet, and now AI, and why finding a gap and actually closing it are two different things.
**The Gap Nobody Taught You**
Whether it's social skills, household basics, or how to exist at work without over-apologizing or overreacting, most of us are carrying at least one gap that no one ever explained. It usually isn't anyone's fault. It's just something that got missed.
**Books Were the First Tool**
Long before search engines, a stranger in print could hand you a lesson your own family never did. I talk about the Wayne Dyer book that taught me nobody can push your buttons unless I let them, and how that one idea changed how I handled a difficult home life.
**The Internet Cracked It Wide Open**
Once you could type a question into a search bar at eleven at night instead of finding the right book or working up the nerve to ask someone in person, closing a gap got a lot less embarrassing and a lot more immediate.
**AI Changes the Conversation, Not Just the Answer**
Unlike a book or a single search result, AI lets you ask follow-up questions, push back, and get something personalized to your actual situation, whether that's understanding a 401k or figuring out what to serve when you host people for the first time.
**The Trap of Easy Answers**
Because AI makes getting an answer so easy, it's also easy to stop questioning it. I talk about why curiosity still matters: ask where the information came from, ask it to double-check itself, and don't let the ease replace the thinking.
**Close the Gap on Purpose**
Finding a gap isn't the same as closing it. It takes three steps: identifying it, deciding to actually fill it instead of shrugging it off, and spending the deliberate time to do it.
