If you have a hypothyroid condition, there are certain foods you should avoid. Goitrogens are substances that can cause the thyroid gland to enlarge, leading to a condition called goiter. Goitrogenic foods interfere with certain enzymes and stimulate the production of thyroid stimulating hormone, making the thyroid gland larger. Examples of goitrogenic foods to avoid include cassava, lima beans, sorghum, sweet potato, flax seed, cruciferous vegetables (such as broccoli, kale, and cabbage), millet, soy (including tofu and soy milk), and onions. Gluten, found in grains, can also negatively affect the thyroid, particularly in cases of Hashimoto's, an autoimmune thyroid condition. It is important to avoid anything that depletes selenium, iodine, iron, and vitamin A, as these nutrients are crucial for thyroid health. To ensure sufficient intake of iodine and selenium, include seafood, sea cow, and Brazil nuts in your diet. Iron can be obtained from red meat or animal products, and sources of vitamin A include egg yolks, butter, cod liver oil, and beef liver.
