#161 Freelancer Story: Virtual Assistant to Content Marketer with Sophia Vega
Content Marketing Series #4
After a year filled with school closures and uncertainty, a dedicated teacher with 15 years of experience found herself spending most of her time at home working on school-related tasks. She knew deep down that this pace was unsustainable. Then, a simple quote shared on social media struck a chord: "You're totally replaceable at work, but you're not replaceable at home. Home is your real life. Keep that perspective always."
In this episode of our Content Marketing series, Sophia Vega shares her freelancer origin story. Sophia is a military spouse, mom of two humans and two fur babies, and a mental health advocate. She quit teaching and started her own business as a VA within a week. Sophia is now an SEO Strategist and Content Marketer.
When she started as a virtual assistant, she noticed that many clients needed marketing assistance. She focused her studies and courses on marketing and rebranded her business after seeing the shortcomings of a client's marketing consultant. Sophia is a go-getter and put herself out there and started taking on more marketing tasks for clients. She upleveled out of a general VA position and into a specialist role. One of her important lessons: promoting yourself and your skills.
Tune in and learn more as Sophia shares:
- how her teaching background set her up for success
- why she niched down into content marketing
- the steps she took to become a content manager
- getting started with SEO
- how to capture a client’s voice

I know Sophia’s story of wanting more freedom will resonate with many of you. It’s great witnessing this shift with more people embracing specialized roles within the VA community. It's essential for both VAs and clients to understand the diverse skill sets available. Start promoting your expertise, break free from generalization, and embrace the specialized talents that make you a Unicorn.
