Episode notes
Refeeding Syndrome Basics
- Refeeding syndrome occurs when a starved person receives carbohydrates, causing an insulin surge.
- This leads to electrolyte imbalances, potentially causing pulmonary edema and even death.
High-Risk Patients
- Consider refeeding syndrome in patients who have been NPO for five to seven days, especially those under metabolic stress.
- High-risk groups include those with psychosocial issues, GI problems, or iatrogenic starvation.
Signs and Symptoms
- Watch for cardiovascular, neurological, and abdominal symptoms in patients at risk for refeeding syndrome.
- These can include arrhythmias, heart failure, delirium, seizures, and muscle weakness.
