Deep dives
Fear as a Habit
Fear is a habit that many people rely on to keep themselves safe, although 99.9% of what we call fear is actually worry. Our biology gives us an awareness of real and present danger, but most of the fear we experience is scaring ourselves with imaginary futures. While this habit may have been helpful in early childhood, by the age of three or five, our brains have developed enough to understand cause and effect and foresee consequences. Recognizing that fear is a habit allows us to realize that we don't have to be afraid to be safe.
Letting Go of Scaring Ourselves
In order to break the habit of fear, it is helpful to notice when we are scaring ourselves with imaginary futures. By paying attention and becoming aware of the fear earlier and earlier, we can stop ourselves from creating that discomfort. Understanding that we are the ones scaring ourselves and that the feeling of fear is unnecessary and often counterproductive can help us let go of this unhelpful habit. By staying present in the moment and realizing that the safest place we can be is right here, right now, we can respond to what's happening without being controlled by fear.
Fear plays a major role in many people’s lives even if they’re unaware of feeling afraid. This week, Michael shares a user-friendly but powerful distinction that will help you to live fearlessly, regardless of your circumstances!
