Deep dives
The Value of Emotional Intelligence in a Technological Age
Emotional intelligence is increasingly recognized as a vital human asset in contrast to the advancing capabilities of artificial intelligence. While AI excels in knowledge and information processing, it lacks the ability to perceive or feel, leaving the emotional realm as a uniquely human domain. This growing divide encourages individuals to develop their emotional skills, particularly in a world where AI is set to handle many tasks traditionally performed by humans. Consequently, prioritizing emotional connection and understanding may lead to improved well-being and stronger interpersonal relationships, enhancing our collective humanity.
Art and Emotions: The Unique Human Experience
Art is intrinsically tied to human emotions, often expressing complex feelings such as grief, joy, and inspiration that AI cannot authentically replicate. For example, Vincent Van Gogh's painting, 'Sorrowing Old Man at Eternity's Gate,' reflects the profound grief the artist experienced before his death, illustrating how deeply personal emotions can influence art. While AI can analyze and generate images based on pre-existing works, it cannot truly understand or feel the emotions that inspired those creations. As a result, human creativity driven by emotional experiences remains unparalleled and serves as a testament to the essential nature of our feelings in contributing to culture and art.
As I continue to research, learn, and strive to grow in emotional intelligence, I’ve wholly moved from looking at it as some touchy-feely concept to perceiving it as what separates humans from…everything else. In the last episode I talked with psychologist, professor, and director of Personal Development at Georgetown University, Patrick Kilcarr. In our discussion he talked much about emotional intelligence as our ability to connect. If we look at the growing power of artificial intelligence, this is what it can’t do. AI is adept at knowledge and learning and information and even innovation. As AI takes over, we humans will struggle to compete in those arenas. But AI is not sentient. It is not able to perceive or feel things. And as such, this seems to be our greatest asset as humans. Or our greatest liability if we are lacking.
