Deep dives
Prioritize Client's Agency in Coaching
In coaching, placing the client's agency and sovereignty at the forefront is essential for ethical practice. Acknowledging that clients seek guidance for self-discovery rather than directives, a coach's role is to support their autonomy and decision-making. Understanding and respecting the client's personal philosophy and beliefs, whether atheist or Christian, establishes a foundation for ethical coaching exchanges. The emphasis lies on empowering clients to self-direct and self-accept within their chosen framework.
Be Trustworthy and Hold Space
Trustworthiness in coaching centers around building and maintaining trust with clients through compassionate neutrality. Being trustworthy involves actively listening more than speaking and apologizing for excessive monologuing. Sharing opinions and instincts labeled as personal viewpoints fosters collaboration rather than imposing directives. The approach includes monitoring internal states to prevent judgmental or critical thoughts and maintaining transparency with financial incentives.
Stay Patient and Curious for Client Progress
Remaining patient and curious in coaching engagements is fundamental to ethical conduct. By avoiding impatience and approaching progress discussions with openness, coaches uphold an optimistic and compassionate perspective. Acknowledging and addressing any financial incentives that may influence interactions helps coaches align their practices with ethical standards. Through prioritizing client agency, trustworthiness, and patience, coaches can ensure ethical and effective coaching relationships.
Mind Financial Incentives for Ethical Coaching
Acknowledging the impact of financial incentives on coaching interactions is crucial for maintaining ethical standards. Coaches should aim to align financial interests with client goals and avoid introducing need-based dynamics into their engagements. The focus on desiring to help clients rather than needing their business reinforces an ethical coaching approach. By addressing and aligning financial incentives responsibly, coaches can uphold trustworthiness and prioritize ethical conduct in their practice.
Coaching is a totally unregulated industry...which is exactly how we like it. With no governing body to create or police our interactions with our clients, it's up to us to define and adhere to a set of ethics that support our clients' safety and progress. In this episode I describe my own simple framework for feeling like I'm running my practice with integrity.
