Ben Greenzweig, an entrepreneur and co-founder of Momentum Events and Momentum Communities PBC, shares his journey of mental health struggles and spiritual awakening on Ken Stearns' podcast, "Mental Health Today." Ben's mission with Momentum Communities PBC is to destigmatize mental health conversations and provide access to evidence-based treatments for those in need. He emphasizes the importance of addressing both the stigma around mental health and the accessibility of treatment.
Growing up in the late '70s and '80s, Ben experienced societal pressure to suppress mental health issues, particularly as a man. He struggled with PTSD, major depressive disorder, and general anxiety disorder for years, self-medicating with alcohol and suffering in silence. Despite trying therapy and Western medicine, he found little relief and felt hollowed out spiritually.
In 2014, at his lowest point, Ben experienced a profound spiritual awakening and embraced Christianity, finding solace and purpose in his faith. This newfound spiritual foundation coincided with his interest in psychedelic-assisted therapy, sparked by reading Michael Pollan's "How to Change Your Mind." He recognized parallels between his healing journey and his evolving spiritual beliefs.
Ben's exploration of psychedelics led him to a deeper understanding of himself and his connection to a higher power. He views psychedelics as a tool for peeling back the layers of the ego and facilitating profound spiritual experiences. Despite initial skepticism and fear of drugs, Ben's research and personal experiences convinced him of their therapeutic potential.
Through Momentum Communities PBC, Ben aims to make psychedelic therapy more accessible and affordable, particularly in underserved communities. He highlights initiatives like the proposed allocation of funds for Ibogaine research in Kentucky, emphasizing the importance of education and community engagement in destigmatizing and expanding access to psychedelic-assisted therapy.
Ben's journey underscores the intersection of mental health, spirituality, and psychedelic therapy in his personal healing and professional endeavors. He credits his faith for guiding him through his struggles and sees his mission as a way to give back and help others find hope and healing in their own journeys toward mental wellness.
