Deep dives
The Importance of an Adequate Support System
An adequate support system is crucial for managing stress, especially for leaders. Many individuals find themselves relying on outdated relationships or connections from their past, like college friends or family, which may not provide the necessary support for their current challenges. This lack of an appropriate support system can lead to severe consequences, such as burnout, toxic behavior, and compromised relationships. Leaders need to create a support network that aligns with their present responsibilities and stresses to thrive as effective, life-giving leaders.
Understanding Stress and Its Impact
Stress is a response to challenges that seem overwhelming and can lead to negative consequences if not managed effectively. Many leaders mistakenly believe that the best way to handle stress is to double down on their efforts, which may provide temporary relief, but ultimately takes an emotional toll. The podcast emphasizes that continually carrying stress without sufficient support can lead to detrimental coping mechanisms and deteriorating character. It is vital for individuals to recognize their stressors and understand the importance of balancing stress with adequate support.
Steps to Build a Strong Support System
Creating a strong support system involves several proactive steps to manage stress effectively. First, individuals should eliminate unnecessary stressors by setting realistic expectations and prioritizing their mental health. Next, establishing consistent daily and weekly habits helps ensure that leaders maintain their energy levels to cope with stress. Lastly, it is essential to assemble a support circle of individuals who can provide insight, encouragement, and accountability during challenging times, adapting these relationships to meet evolving needs.
New Episode: Stress is Killing You and You Need a Better Support System to Avoid Burnout and Thrive - RAL 84
On this episode, Stress is Killing You and You Need a Better Support System to Avoid Burnout and Thrive, I share a short teaching on the correlation between your level of stress and your level of support. Stress feels like a constant battle, if it’s not one thing it’s another. If you were asked what is stressing you out right now and if you were given a pen and piece of paper, you’d start making a list. Often the more stressful life become the more we tell ourselves, "Put your head down and work harder". The majority of us have an inadequate support system for the level of stress we are leading under. This is a dangerous spot for any leader to be in. It’s the root cause of addiction, toxic behavior, and ultimately burnout. This is a really important conversation when it comes to being a life-giving giving leader for life. This episode is direct and practical.
Episode Quote:
"You need habits and relationships that can offer you the support you need right now, not the support you needed 10 or twenty years ago. I love that you still have friends from college, but the areas of your life that matter most right now need mentors, not friends."
