Deep dives
Handwriting Analysis: Science or Subjectivity?
Handwriting analysis has been regarded with skepticism regarding its scientific validity. Two types of handwriting analysis exist: forensic analysis, often used in legal settings, and graphology, which attempts to deduce personality traits from handwriting. Notably, Supreme Court cases have raised concerns about the reliability of forensic handwriting analysis, noting that experts can be as inaccurate as average individuals. Research has shown that claims about handwriting's uniqueness lack evidence, indicating that handwriting offers little insight into a person's character beyond the words they write.
The Mindset of Wealth Creation
Wealth is often misunderstood as merely having a lot of money, but true wealth is more about owning your time and pursuing meaningful activities. Self-made millionaires in the U.S. typically exemplify a frugal mindset, prioritizing saving and investing over conspicuous consumption. A significant misconception is that entrepreneurship is the primary pathway to wealth; however, most millionaires are employees who build wealth steadily through consistent saving and investing habits. This frugality often entails limiting expenses in a way that fosters long-term financial freedom rather than temporary satisfaction.
The Power of Suggestion
The science of suggestion reveals its profound influence on behavior and perception, often operating without our conscious awareness. Factors that shape how we respond to suggestions include the context in which they are delivered, the credibility of the source, and our past experiences. Researchers study how different situations leverage suggestion, such as the placebo effect, where individuals experience real changes based on their expectations. Understanding these mechanisms can help us both influence others and protect ourselves from unintended manipulation.
Strategies for Building Wealth
Building wealth is not simply about saving; it's about creating a strategy to prioritize financial goals. Individuals are encouraged to automate saving and investing, treating it as a non-negotiable expense. Even starting with small amounts can lead to greater financial security over time. By creating designated accounts for specific goals and visualizing their desired outcomes, individuals can greatly enhance their motivation and commitment to achieving financial independence.
What does it take to become wealthy? There seems to be a lot of confusion about who becomes wealthy and why. Most millionaires today did not inherit their wealth, they are self-made millionaires. How they became wealthy has a lot to do with their mindset. Wealthy people think differently about money according to my guest Brad Klontz. The power of suggestion is something most of us don’t truly understand and yet we are constantly being bombarded by suggestions all day. The power of suggestion can make you buy things, do things and believe things you might not otherwise. Even the placebo effect is an example of the power of suggestion at work. Joining me to explain the workings of the power of suggestion is Amir Raz. He is a neuroscientist and well-known expert on the science of suggestion. He has held positions as Canada Research Chair, Professor of Psychiatry, Neurology and Neurosurgery, and Psychology at McGill University, and he is author of the book The Suggestible Brain: The Science and Magic of How We Make Up Our Minds (https://amzn.to/3BSHVzA).
