Deep dives
Overview of High Rocks Competition
High Rocks is a competitive event consisting of eight rounds, each involving a 1K run combined with a functional movement, such as skiing, sled pushing, and wall balls. Competitors can enter in various divisions including pro, open, doubles, and relays, with the pro division featuring heavier weights and more challenging tasks. The speaker participated in the pro division at the Dallas event, after months of specific training starting in June. Each round uniquely combines endurance and strength, making it essential for competitors to prepare rigorously across all functional movements.
Experience and Challenges During the Race
During the race, the speaker faced various challenges, particularly with functional movements like the sled pull and burpee broad jumps, areas where he had not adequately trained. He noted that while he had a strong start, his heart rate spiked significantly, affecting his performance negatively in subsequent rounds. The competitive environment, complete with over 6,000 participants, intensified the already demanding experience, as racers maneuvered through their heats while dealing with their elevated heart rates. The struggle with certain stations revealed the importance of focused training and technique, as well as the unpredictability of actual race conditions compared to simulations.
Lessons Learned and Future Goals
Post-race reflections highlighted the significance of experience in competitive events, emphasizing how a first race serves as a crucial learning opportunity for refining strategies and training methods. The speaker recognized areas for improvement, including run times and efficiency at specific functional movement stations, allowing for targeted training in preparation for future competitions. He outlined ambitious goals for the coming year, including a marathon target, and plans to utilize heart rate monitoring for better training management. This commitment to improvement and structured training showcases the speaker's dedication to enhancing performance in endurance events.
