Deep dives
Realizing Intersectionality between Neurodiversity and Queerness
During a niche queer neurodiverse group therapy, Rosie learned that there is a significant overlap between neurodiverse individuals and the queer community. About 25% of queer people identify as autistic, highlighting the intersection between neurodiversity and queerness. Rosie identifies as bisexual and pansexual, but prefers pansexual as it encompasses attraction to all genders. She acknowledges her privilege in having a supportive cisgender husband who allows her to embrace her queer identity. Rosie also discusses the importance of queer spaces in her life and compares it to the significance that religious faith holds for some individuals.
Navigating Recovery in Substance Abuse and Eating Disorders
Rosie and the podcast host reflect on their experiences with recovery from substance abuse and eating disorders. Rosie talks about the challenges of maintaining a healthy weight and managing disordered eating thoughts. She highlights the comorbidity of neurodiversity and addictive tendencies, such as black-and-white thinking and all-or-nothing mindset. The discussion also touches upon the 12-step program and finding one's own path to recovery. Rosie shares her personal journey of defining recovery as abstinence from addictive substances while exploring the benefits of reintroducing cannabis in small amounts.
Career Journey in Theater and Arts
Rosie shares her educational and professional journey in theater and the arts. She pursued a journalism program with a focus on arts reporting and criticism, leading her to work in public relations and publicity for various performing arts organizations. Rosie also discusses her role in starting and managing Theatre 20, an artist-led theater company that successfully fundraised for Canadian productions. She describes her passion for producing and putting together creative teams. Despite facing challenges and experiencing a mental breakdown, Rosie remains connected to the theater community and finds fulfillment in working closely with artists.
Influences on Political and Progressive Worldview
Rosie attributes her progressive worldview to her upbringing, particularly being raised in a theater community that emphasized diversity and acceptance. She discusses how her mother's openness and exposure to the theater industry sheltered her from racism, homophobia, and other forms of discrimination until she entered public school. Rosie recognizes the importance of her mother's influence in shaping her understanding of social justice issues. Additionally, the podcast host mentions Rosie's alignment with good politics and how her diverse experiences have likely contributed to her worldview.
This is part 2 of my interview w/Rosie. In this segment, we discuss her sexual and gender identity, eating disorders, addiction, recovery, college, and some of her professional life. As with parts 1 and 3, please be aware we address heavy topics like those I just mentioned as well as sexual assault, religion, and mental health.
