126. Fast Friday: Real Talk Relationships & What Your Phone Notifications Are Actually Doing to the People You're With!
Have you ever been sitting at lunch, at a meeting our otherwise talking with someone when suddenly their phone notification goes off or they get a "PING!" from a text message where they stop talking and engaging with you, only to switch their attention to the intrusion or other person?
Or maybe sometimes you are somewhere in public and suddenly realize that everyone around you is plastered to their phone and totally oblivious to the environment and people that are right around them.
People walking their dogs, people in coffee shops, people in the grocery store, and even families at the dinner table these days are often more engrossed with that tiny little screen in their hand than they are with each other.
Is anyone truly 100% PRESENT anymore?!
Not sure how you feel about it but this is one of my biggest pet peeves! You too?
I came across this handy little article written by Dr. Gwendolyn Seidman, a sociologist who reported on the scale and dynamic of harm we unknowingly commit when we focus on our phones instead of our friends. There is actually a term for this behavior: “phubbing,” as in "snubbing" others with your "phone"! And it’s something that actually 90% of adults admit to doing so chances are we are ALL guilty of this so you'll want to tune in to today's Fast Friday to hear about some of the interesting findings Dr. Seidman came across through this study.
(Should we add "phubbing" to our modern day vocabulary?...haha!)
