Deep dives
The Rise of Shein and Its Impact
Shein has rapidly skyrocketed to prominence in the fast fashion industry, becoming a $66 billion company within just five years. Its success is largely attributed to strategic influencer marketing on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, where influencers showcase massive hauls of Shein clothing at incredibly low prices, such as dresses for $12. Coupled with this marketing strategy is Shein’s ability to produce high volumes of trendy clothing, allowing it to respond quickly to consumer demand and surpass established brands like Zara and H&M. This combination of affordability and real-time production adjustments has solidified Shein’s position as a dominant force in the global market, particularly appealing to consumers under 30 years old.
Working Conditions in Shein Village
The working conditions in Xi'an Village, known as Shein Village, reveal a complex reality for the garment workers producing fast fashion. Workers typically endure grueling hours, with an average workweek of around 75 hours, often with just one day off per month, far exceeding Chinese labor laws that stipulate a maximum of 44 hours and one rest day each week. Many of these workers are migrants who travel long distances to earn money to support their families, often paid just 1 to 2 yuan per piece, which translates to around 10 cents for each T-shirt made. Despite the challenging circumstances, workers feel a strong sense of responsibility to fuel the industry and provide for their families, highlighting the socio-economic pressures driving labor practices in this sector.
Controversies Surrounding Shein
Shein faces significant scrutiny regarding its labor practices and sourcing of materials, particularly concerning allegations of forced labor and the use of cotton from Xinjiang, China. Recent developments in UK Parliament illustrate the pressure on the company to clarify its supply chain, as Shein's top lawyer struggled to respond to questions regarding their cotton sources. While the company asserts compliance with fair labor standards, previous findings of cramped conditions and child labor in its supply chain have raised alarms among human rights groups. As Shein prepares for potential public offerings, analysts note their efforts to improve transparency and reputation in light of these controversies, signaling a critical juncture for the fast fashion giant.
The fast fashion giant Shein has taken the world by storm and is now worth an estimated $66billion. But have you ever wondered where their clothes come from? The BBC’s China correspondent Laura Bicker has been to Panyu, in the city of Guangzhou in China, to find out. She tells us how Shein became so successful, why some people in their factories are working 75 hours a week, and what Shein is doing to try to improve its manufacturing practices.
Many people choose fast fashion because of cost. We also speak to fashion blogger 17 year old Onyeka Idiaghe about why she eventually decided to seek alternatives.
