Emotions as the Overflow of What We Love
Emotions are a reflection of what we care about and value. They stem from the heart and shape how we feel. Our emotions are directed by what we love, whether it's joy, sorrow, or grief. The Bible teaches that what we treasure will shape what we feel.
Emotions Happen in Our Bodies
Our emotions are not only experienced internally but also expressed physically. When we are sad, tears flow. When we are angry, our faces may turn red. God has designed us as embodied souls, connecting the physical and emotional aspects of our being. Our emotions are meant to be a part of our connection with others and with God.
The Complexity of Controlling Emotions
We cannot simply turn off or control our emotions with a switch. This is because the purpose of our emotions is to connect us to God and to others. While it is important to have self-awareness and respond appropriately to our emotions, trying to completely control or suppress them would hinder our ability to express our cares and concerns to God and to engage in loving relationships.
“The heart poured out to the Lord is actually a form of trust.” Sometimes we find ourselves unable to control our emotions. Often this produces guilt, and we wonder, “What does that say about my faith?” How do we navigate such an experience? Listen as Alasdair Groves discusses this experience and what faithful living looks like in this first episode of a miniseries on emotions. Related resources:
