Jason Hickel, advocate for Degrowth, discusses the solutions proposed by Degrowth to achieve sustainability and equality. Topics include challenging the effectiveness of capitalism in poverty reduction, addressing inequalities in energy and resource use, tools for closing the inequality gap, and the colonial dimensions of the ecological crisis.
Capitalism has predominantly benefited rich countries and individuals while exploiting the labor and resources of the global poor, perpetuating inequality and poverty.
Addressing inequality both within and between countries is crucial in a degrowth scenario, and can be achieved through decommodifying key social goods, redistribution measures, and shifting towards more democratic economic governance.
Deep dives
Capitalism and Poverty Eradication
Capitalism is often credited with lifting people out of poverty, but the reality is more complex. While capitalism has undeniably led to economic growth, it has not effectively met the needs of the poor. The poverty line set at $1.90 per day by the World Bank is arbitrary and does not consider actual human needs. When using more empirically grounded poverty lines, it becomes clear that poverty has not been dramatically reduced. The reality is that capitalism has produced extraordinary wealth, but it has predominantly benefited rich countries and individuals while exploiting the labor and resources of the global poor, perpetuating inequality and poverty.
Balancing Growth and Sustainability
Achieving both sustainability and increased well-being for the poor requires a delicate balance. Global energy and resource use must be reduced to tackle ecological degradation. However, the poor in developing countries also need increased access to resources to meet their basic needs. The solution lies in a convergence scenario where rich countries decrease their energy and resource use while poor countries reclaim and increase their access to energy and resources. This convergence should be guided by the principles of high human well-being and staying within planetary boundaries, ensuring a better quality of life for all.
Redistribution and Access
Addressing inequality both within and between countries is crucial in a degrowth scenario. Private ownership of vital resources must be distinguished from access to these resources. By decommodifying key social goods like housing, healthcare, and education, access to essential services can be improved without the need for high levels of private income. Redistribution measures such as a shorter working week, living wages, and progressive taxation can further ensure a fair distribution of income. Additionally, public provisioning and universal public services can increase resource efficiency and provide wider access to necessary goods and services.
Ending Imperial Domination
Imperial dimensions of the global economy contribute to international inequalities. Rich countries, which control the rules of international trade and finance, perpetuate unequal exchange, draining resources from the global south. To address this, global south countries must have the right to protect their economies through measures such as tariffs, subsidies, and nationalization. A shift towards more democratic economic governance is necessary to reverse the effects of colonialism and improve the economic sovereignty of the global south.
Degrowth is a research field and a social movement that aims to transcend the primacy of economic growth and transition societies to an ecologically more sustainable and socially more just world. Overcoming our environmental sustainability hurdles through mainstream approaches like eco-modernisation does not even try to tackle the problems of social injustices like inequality. Our guest, Jason Hickel argues that the root of environmental and social problems is the same and through Degrowth we can address both of them at the same time. In this episode we talk about the solutions suggested by Degrowth to both sustainability and more equality.
