Deep dives
Teaching graphic design through an application
The podcast episode features Tony Mumo, who created Mark Me Icons, an education technology platform. The platform teaches graphic design skills and initially started as a WhatsApp group. Tony spent $1.50 on Facebook ads to acquire his first 102 beta users, 64 of whom are still active daily. He plans to launch a paywall in January, offering courses for $10 per month or $30 for a three-month period. Last year, he raised $18,000 in pre-seed funding and currently has a team of six people.
Acquiring beta users through Facebook ads
In the early stages of Mark Me Icons, Tony used Facebook ads to attract users to his WhatsApp group. He spent approximately 500 shillings (around $1.50) per user to acquire his first 100 students. The affordability of Facebook ads in Kenya allowed him to target specific communities for marketing purposes. By testing the concept on WhatsApp, Tony realized the viability of his product and subsequently developed the Mark Me Icons app.
Building the team and future plans
Mark Me Icons currently has 102 beta users, with web design skills as their most popular course. The team consists of graphic designers, an analytics and design manager, a legal officer, an education manager, and a developer. They plan to monetize the platform in January, starting with a three-month pricing plan offering courses for 4,500 shillings (approximately $45). The company has raised $18,000 in funding, with 500,000 shillings (around $3,300) remaining in the bank.
SaaS is worldwide. This Kenyan based founder creatively used underpriced FB ads to get new users for $1.50 each. 60% of signups are still active on a daily basis. Will they convert to paid when he launches his paywall?
