The Boundary Dispute: Toledo's Identity Crisis

In the early 1800s, the state boundary dispute between Ohio and Michigan centered around the city of Toledo. The inaccurate drawing of the ordinance line led to conflicting claims on the territory. Private interests in Ohio saw Toledo as a potential economic hub due to canal plans. Michigan, however, argued for Toledo's inclusion in its statehood. Tensions escalated with the involvement of militias and skirmishes at the border. Eventually, President Jackson intervened, removing Michigan's governor from office. The dispute continued until the boundary was finally settled in Ohio's favor.
