Artistology: Creating a Supportive Community for Music Artists
Tammy McCrary, the CEO and founder of Artistology, shares her journey in the entertainment industry and the challenges she faced. Growing up in a family of artists, Tammy was destined to work and be around creativity. She managed her sister, Chaka Khan, for 20 years and helped establish her as a philanthropist. However, when they parted ways, Tammy went through a dark night of the soul to rediscover her purpose. She founded Artistology, a community focused on the well-being and support of artists. With mental health resources and a community of like-minded individuals, Artistology aims to shift the narrative of the struggling artist to one of thriving and empowerment.
The Cycle of Invalidation: Understanding the Struggles of Artists
Through her research, Tammy discovered that many music artists suffer from anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and even suicide rates higher than the general population. She attributes this to the cycle of invalidation that artists often fall into. When artists seek validation and open themselves up to criticism, they start comparing themselves to others and compromising their authentic expression. The pressure of competition leads to inauthenticity and can take a toll on an artist's well-being. Artistology aims to break this cycle and create a space where artists can support one another, receive mental health support, and thrive.
The Power of Community and Mental Health Support
One of the key aspects of Artistology is its emphasis on building a supportive community for artists. By connecting with like-minded individuals who understand their journey, artists can find guidance and mentorship. Furthermore, Artistology provides mental health support through a HIPAA-compliant telehealth platform. Artists can access one-on-one and group therapy anonymously if desired, ensuring privacy and confidentiality. Tammy believes that by addressing the well-being of artists proactively, they can create their best work and make a positive impact on humanity.
Embracing Imperfect Perfection and Spreading Love
Tammy acknowledges that one of her biggest challenges in launching Artistology was perfectionism. However, she realized that waiting for perfection was a disservice to those who need support now. By surrendering the need for perfection and embracing imperfection, she is able to bring the vision of Artistology to life. Tammy believes that love and compassion are essential for humanity to thrive. She encourages everyone to listen and have compassion for one another, understand before judging, and exercise more love. Through Artistology, Tammy aims to spread love, support artists, and foster a culture that values and reveres the artist's role in society.
From Tammy's website: "Her mission is to provide a safe and trusted community offering wellness resources just for artists where they can connect and collaborate with other artists who get them and resources that empower them."
