Serotonin's Role
- Serotonin, an evolutionarily old neuromodulator, 'tunes' brain function rather than directly exciting or inhibiting it.
- It modulates states of consciousness, sleep architecture, and mood, and is implicated in many psychiatric disorders.
Serotonin System Complexity
- The serotonin system's complexity stems from its numerous receptors (around 14), each triggering different responses.
- This complexity is highlighted by how different drugs like Prozac and LSD, both acting on serotonin, produce vastly different effects.
1A Receptor Function
- The serotonin 1A receptor, when stimulated presynaptically, inhibits serotonin release, acting like a regulatory brake.
- Postsynaptically, in areas like the stress circuitry, its stimulation inhibits receiving cells, potentially reducing anxiety and stress.

In this episode, we begin to explore the neurobiology of the serotonin system — along with key pharmacological agents (SSRIs and classical psychedelics) that act on this system — with guest expert Dr. Robin Carhart-Harris, a neuroscientist and head of the Centre for Psychedelic Research at Imperial College London.
Our discussion is more theoretical than directly clinically relevant, striving to provide a mechanistic understanding of how serotonin functions within the brain and how serotonin-modulating drugs influence this system.
