Deep dives
The Historic Sale of Fordune
In October 2021, Fordune, a 42-acre estate previously owned by the Ford family, sold for $105 million, setting a record for the highest sale price for a single parcel on the East End. Originally listed at $175 million, the property features nearly a quarter mile of private oceanfront, demonstrating its unique appeal and luxurious offerings. The estate, located in Water Mill but often associated with Southampton, is notable for its remarkable size and ocean access, which contribute to its high valuation. This record-setting sale highlights the enduring demand for prestigious real estate in elite coastal areas, despite significant price fluctuations and market comparisons.
The Ford Family Legacy
The episode delves into the history of the Ford family, particularly focusing on Henry Ford II's lifestyle and his ambitions in Southampton during the mid-20th century. After acquiring several parcels of land, he commissioned a grand estate that resembled a European chateau, costing approximately $2.3 million to build and furnish, showcasing the opulence of the time. Despite its grandeur, the estate became a symbol of wealth and social status, with the Fords hosting numerous lavish events. However, the family's struggles with personal relationships culminated in divorce, raising questions about the connection between wealth and happiness, especially as the estate changed hands.
A Cultural Moment in 1964
A significant event highlighted is a 1964 political fundraiser hosted at Fordune for President Lyndon B. Johnson's daughter, combining high society with an unexpected Texas-themed barbecue. As nearly 2,000 guests turned out, the grandeur of the estate contrasted sharply with the informal and festive atmosphere of the event, which featured traditional Texas barbecue served by notable figures. This gathering marked a moment in Southampton's social landscape, symbolizing a shift as it welcomed more diverse cultural influences amidst its historical elite setting. The anecdote of cowboy shirts and barbecue at a mansion underscores the blending of different social realms, reflecting changing dynamics in American society.
Esperanza and Irwin have talked of many grand estates on the East End; the Bell Estate, Bayberryland and the Dunes come to mind. Fordune certainly has its place in this conversation. Ford methodically acquired 235 acres including significant oceanfront to construct the 16000 square foot manse. Sadly, Ford's marriage to Anne McDonnell Ford ended in divorce, and she was awarded Fordune in the settlement. In 1975 Anne sold the estate to Italian financier Carlo Traglio. He paid the bargain price of $1.8 million, $500,000 less than Ford spent to build just the mansion. Traglio then subdivided theproperty, keeping the main house and 44 acres of oceanfront for himself. The other acres were divided into a gated enclave of 40 homes. (The Hilton family owns one of them, comprising 2.7 acres.) It was sold a few years back for the then highest price of a single property on the East End. $105m.
